A contract has odd pages that carry the terms and even pages that carry the signatures. You want a "DRAFT" watermark on every odd page and a "CONFIDENTIAL" watermark on every even page, or perhaps no watermark at all on the signature pages so the signatures remain perfectly clear. Applying a uniform watermark to every page is easy. Applying different watermarks to different pages requires finer control, but the tools exist and the process is well-defined.
Selective watermarking serves specific purposes. Odd pages might carry the document identifier while even pages carry the recipient name. Section dividers might be left unmarked while content pages carry a security classification. Signature and notary pages might be excluded from watermarks entirely to ensure the marks remain legible. Each of these scenarios is achievable with the right approach.
Method 1: Split, Watermark Separately, and Re-Merge
The most universally applicable method requires no advanced features and works in any PDF toolset. Split the original PDF into separate files, one containing the odd pages and one containing the even pages. Apply one watermark to the odd-page file and a different watermark to the even-page file, or apply a watermark to one set and leave the other set unmarked. Then merge the two watermarked files back together, alternating pages to restore the original sequence.
The splitting step is the key to precision. In the watermark dialog, configure the first watermark, the text, font, size, angle, opacity, and position. In the Page Range Options section, specify which pages receive this watermark. For odd pages only, select Pages and enter a pattern like "1,3,5,7,9" or use the "Odd Pages Only" preset if available. Apply the watermark.
Repeat the process for the second watermark, this time specifying the even pages. The two watermarks are applied independently to their respective page sets. The original PDF is never split, so there is no risk of pages getting out of order during re-merging. This method is faster and less error-prone than split-and-merge, but it requires Acrobat Pro. If you already have it, this is the cleanest approach.
Method 3: Browser-Based Tools With Multiple Passes
A browser-based watermarking tool applies watermarks to all pages by default. To achieve selective watermarking, use the multiple-pass approach. Upload the document, apply the first watermark, and download the partially watermarked file. Then split the file into the pages that need the second watermark and the pages that do not. Apply the second watermark to the pages that need it, and merge everything back together. While this involves more steps than the Acrobat page-range approach, it is accessible from any browser on any operating system and requires no software installation.
The efficiency of this approach depends on the pattern of watermarks you need. For a simple odd-even split, one split, two watermark passes, one merge, the process is quick. For a complex pattern where pages 1 through 5 get watermark A, pages 6 through 10 get watermark B, pages 11 through 15 get no watermark, and pages 16 through 20 get watermark C, the split-and-merge workflow becomes unwieldy. At that point, a tool with built-in page-range watermarking saves significant time.
Keeping Signature and Notary Pages Clean
The most common reason for selective watermarking is to exclude watermarks from pages that contain signatures, notary stamps, or official seals. A watermark that overlaps a signature can render the signature illegible or make the document appear tampered with. The recipient may reject the document on the grounds that the watermark obscures legally significant content.
The practice is to identify the specific PDF Pages that contain signatures before applying watermarks. Note their page numbers. Apply the watermark to all pages, then use the split tool to extract only the signature pages, apply no watermark or a lighter watermark to them, and re-merge. Alternatively, if the document has only a few signature pages at known positions, split the document into three sections: pre-signature pages, signature pages, and post-signature pages. Watermark the first and third sections as needed, and leave the signature section clean. Re-merge all three sections into the final document.
Quality Checking Selectively Watermarked Output
After applying different watermarks to different pages, a methodical quality check prevents embarrassing mistakes. Scroll through every page of the output document. Verify that odd pages carry the correct watermark and even pages carry their correct watermark. Check that pages meant to be watermark-free are indeed free of any mark. Confirm that watermarks are positioned consistently across pages. A watermark that drifts by half an inch across pages looks sloppy and unprofessional.
Pay special attention to the transition pages where the watermark changes or disappears. Page 10 with watermark A followed by page 11 with watermark B should show a clean, intentional transition. If page 11 accidentally received watermark A because of an off-by-one error in the page range specification, the error is immediately visible at the boundary. Check both sides of every transition.
