Converting PDF pages to high-resolution images is a common production task, and the quality of the output depends almost entirely on two factors: the resolution you choose and the image format you export to. Getting these right means the difference between a printed page that looks indistinguishable from the digital original and one that appears soft, pixelated, or washed out.

Choosing the Right Resolution for Print vs Screen
Resolution determines how much detail is captured from each PDF page. For images destined for professional printing, 300 DPI is the standard. At this resolution, the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels on paper held at reading distance. Most commercial printers require a minimum of 300 DPI, and many specify 300 DPI exactly because their equipment is calibrated to that density. For images destined for screen display only, websites, social media, email, digital presentations, 150 DPI is sufficient. A computer monitor displays 92 to 220 pixels per inch, so a 150 DPI image has more resolution than the screen can show. Exporting at 300 DPI for screen use wastes file size on pixels the viewer will never see. A 300 DPI letter-sized page is roughly 8.4 megapixels and 2 to 5 MB as a JPEG. The same page at 150 DPI is roughly 2.1 megapixels and 400 KB to 1 MB. For a 50-page document being converted for a web gallery, the difference between 300 DPI and 150 DPI is the difference between a 250 MB download and a 50 MB download.
For archival or future-proofing purposes, where the image may be used for both print and screen at different times, exporting at 300 DPI and keeping the high-resolution original is the safe approach. You can always downsample a 300 DPI image to 150 DPI for web use. You cannot recover detail that was lost by exporting at a lower resolution. If it is 2400 by 3150, the resolution or dimensions were set incorrectly during export. Confirm that bleed areas, if required, are included in the exported images. Bleed is the extra image area beyond the trim line that ensures color extends to the edge of the paper after cutting. If the print shop asks for 0.125 inches of bleed, your exported images need to include that extra area around all four edges.
Send a test file if the print run is large or expensive. Export one page as an image according to the print shop's specifications, send it to them for verification, and wait for their confirmation that it meets their requirements before exporting the entire document.
