You send a PDF to a client. They open it and the document fills a small corner of their screen at 50% zoom with tiny, unreadable text. They have to squint, pinch to zoom, and scroll sideways to read each line. Or the opposite happens: the PDF opens at 300% zoom so they can only see a postage-stamp-sized portion of the page with no context for where they are. Neither experience is the client's fault. The PDF's default view settings were never configured, and the viewer is guessing.
Every PDF can specify how it should appear when first opened: what zoom level to use, whether to show a single page or a continuous scroll, which page to display first, and whether the navigation panels should be open or closed. These settings are stored in the PDF's metadata and are honored by every major PDF viewer. Setting them takes seconds and dramatically improves the first impression your document makes.
What the Initial View Settings Control
PDF initial view settings control four aspects of how the document presents itself on open. The zoom level can be set to a specific percentage, or to one of several automatic modes: Fit Page, which scales the entire page to fit the window height; Fit Width, which scales to fill the window width; or Actual Size, which displays the page at its physical dimensions regardless of screen size. Fit Width is the most user-friendly default for reading-oriented documents because it uses the full width of the viewer window without requiring horizontal scrolling.
The page layout determines how pages are arranged in the viewing window. Single Page mode shows one page at a time, requiring the user to click or scroll to advance. Single Page Continuous stacks pages vertically in one long scroll, which is more comfortable for reading on screens. Two-Up mode shows two pages side by side, like an open book, which is appropriate for documents designed with facing-page layouts. Two-Up Continuous combines the two-page view with vertical scrolling, showing each pair of facing pages as the user scrolls down.
The page number setting lets you specify which page the document opens to. This is useful for documents where the first few pages are cover art, a table of contents, or legal disclaimers, and the actual content starts on page 3. Setting the open page to 3 means the recipient sees the beginning of the content immediately, rather than a mostly blank cover page.
The panels and bars setting controls whether the bookmarks panel, page thumbnails panel, and toolbar are visible when the document opens. For a PDF Navigation document with a well-structured bookmark hierarchy, showing the bookmarks panel on open gives the recipient an instant table of contents they can use to jump to any section. For a short document with no bookmarks, hiding the panels gives the content more screen space.
How to Set the Default View in Adobe Acrobat
In Adobe Acrobat Pro, open the PDF and go to File, then Properties, or press Ctrl+D. Select the Initial View tab. This tab contains all four settings described above. Under Layout and Magnification, set the Navigation Tab to the view you want: Page Only, Bookmarks Panel and Page, or Pages Panel and Page. Set the Page Layout to Single Page Continuous for reading documents or Single Page for presentations. Set the Magnification to Fit Width for general reading or a specific percentage if your document is designed at a particular zoom level. Under Window Options, you can also control whether the document opens in a new window and whether the window is resized to fit the page, though these settings have less impact on modern tabbed PDF viewers.
After setting the initial view, save the document. The settings are embedded in the file and will take effect the next time anyone opens it in a compliant PDF viewer. Test this yourself: close the file completely, reopen it, and verify that the view matches your expectations. If it does not, check that you saved after changing the properties. The initial view settings are not applied until the file is saved.
How to Set the Default View Using Browser-Based or Free Tools

An important note about browser PDF viewers: Chrome, Edge, and Firefox each have their own default zoom behavior that may override the PDF's initial view settings. A PDF set to Fit Width may open at Actual Size in Chrome depending on the browser's PDF viewer settings and window size. The initial view settings are most reliably honored by dedicated PDF applications like Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on Mac, and mobile PDF apps. Browser viewers provide a baseline experience but do not guarantee fidelity to the document's embedded preferences.
Choosing the Right Default View for Your Document Type
The best default view depends on what kind of document you are sharing and how you expect the recipient to read it. For reports, proposals, contracts, and any primarily text-based document meant to be read on screen, Single Page Continuous with Fit Width is the recommended configuration. The recipient can scroll smoothly through the entire document without interruption, and the text uses the full window width at a comfortable reading size.
For presentations, portfolios, and design proofs, where each page is a self-contained visual composition, Single Page mode with Fit Page is the better choice. This ensures each page is viewed as intended without distraction from the adjacent pages. The recipient advances through the document one page at a time, like flipping through a physical presentation deck. If your document uses facing-page spreads, Two-Up mode with a cover page specified as the first page creates a book-like reading experience where the first page appears alone and subsequent pages appear in pairs.
For forms, set the zoom to Fit Width or a specific percentage that makes the form fields legible at a glance. The PDF Reading experience benefits from showing the entire page without navigation panels that distract from filling in the fields. Show the bookmarks panel only if the form has named sections the user needs to navigate between. Most forms benefit from a clean, panel-free PDF Viewing experience where the entire page is visible and the focus is on filling in the fields, not on navigating a complex document structure.
Setting a Default Page That Is Not the First Page
Some documents benefit from opening on a page other than page 1. An ebook PDF might start on the first page of Chapter 1 rather than the cover. A report might skip the executive summary and open directly to the detailed findings. A portfolio might skip the title page and open to the first project. In Acrobat Pro, set the open page in the Initial View tab under the Open To Page option. Type the page number you want, save the file, and the next recipient sees that page first.
A subtle but important detail: the page number you enter refers to the PDF's physical page number, not any logical page label the document might have. If your document has a cover page as physical page 1 but the printed page number on the cover is blank, and you want to open to the page printed as page 1, you need to know that it is physical page 2. Check physical page numbers in the viewer's page counter, not by looking at the numbers on the pages themselves.
