Removing a watermark from a PDF is sometimes necessary when you're working with a draft document that's been superseded, a template with a demo watermark, or a file you own where the watermark is no longer needed. The ease of removal depends on how the watermark was added.
Why Watermark Removal Difficulty Varies
Watermarks added as a separate layer or annotation are much easier to remove than watermarks that have been flattened into the page content. A layered watermark exists as a distinct element in the PDF structure and can be deleted like any other object. A flattened watermark is merged into the page image, making it indistinguishable from the underlying content โ removing it means editing pixels, which is far more complex.
How to Remove a Layered Watermark
In Adobe Acrobat Pro, go to Tools > Edit PDF. Click on the watermark text or image. If it's a separate layer, it will be selectable โ click it and press Delete. If the watermark was added through Acrobat's watermark tool specifically, go to Tools > Edit PDF > Watermark > Remove, which removes all Acrobat-added watermarks from every page in one step.
WukongPDF's PDF Editor can also select and delete watermark elements that exist as separate objects on the page. Open the editor, click on the watermark, and delete it. Download the updated file. This works for text watermarks that weren't flattened into the document.
Removing a Watermark From a Scanned or Flattened PDF
If the watermark has been flattened into the page โ merged with the content so it can't be selected separately โ removal requires image editing. Export the affected pages as high-resolution images using a PDF to Image tool, then open each image in an image editor like Photoshop or GIMP. Use the clone stamp, healing brush, or content-aware fill tools to paint over the watermark area, matching the surrounding content.
This approach works reasonably well when the watermark sits on a plain background. When it overlaps complex content like body text or detailed graphics, clean removal becomes much more difficult and time-consuming.
Reassembling the PDF After Watermark Removal
If you had to edit pages as individual images to remove the watermark, convert them back to PDF using WukongPDF's Image to PDF tool and then merge them with any unedited pages using the Merge PDF tool. This reconstructs the complete document with the watermark-free pages in the right positions.
Keep in mind that rebuilding a PDF from edited images means the text on those pages will no longer be searchable โ it's now stored as image pixels rather than characters. If searchability matters, run the reassembled PDF through an OCR tool afterward to restore the text layer.

Removing a watermark from a document you own or have full rights to is straightforward and legal. Removing watermarks from commercially licensed images, copyrighted content, or documents where the watermark was added by another party without your agreement may violate copyright law or contract terms. Make sure you have the right to modify the document before removing any protection or marking.
