How to Password-Protect a PDF on a Public or Shared Library Computer

Using a public computer in a library, a hotel business center, a university computer lab, or a coworking space to open or work with a PDF that contains personal, financial, medical, or otherwise confidential information creates a specific and often underestimated security exposure. The next person who sits down at that same machine may have access to the file you left behind in the downloads folder, the desktop, the browser's download cache, or the recent-files list of the PDF viewer application. Adding a password to the PDF document before it ever touches the shared machine ensures that even if the file remains on the computer after your session ends, the content stays encrypted and completely inaccessible to anyone who does not know the password.

Public-access computers in libraries and similar facilities typically run a guest account that resets after each user logs off. Steps to Take Immediately After Finishing Your Session
