Adding a signature line to a PDF gives recipients a clearly designated place to sign, which speeds up the signing process and reduces the back-and-forth of misplaced signatures. Whether you need a simple visual line with a label or a proper interactive signature field, here's how to set it up.

Signature Line vs Signature Field: What's the Difference?
A signature line is a visual element โ a horizontal line with a label like "Signature" or "Authorized by" underneath it. It tells the recipient where to sign but doesn't have any interactive functionality. A signature field is an interactive PDF form element that a recipient clicks to add their electronic signature using a PDF viewer or e-signature tool. Both serve different purposes depending on whether the document will be signed digitally or printed and signed by hand.

How to Add a Visual Signature Line to a PDF
For a simple visual signature line, use WukongPDF's PDF Editor to draw a horizontal line on the page and add a text label beneath it. Open the editor, select the line drawing tool, draw the line at the appropriate position, then use the text tool to add "Signature", "Date", or whatever label the form requires. Download the updated PDF.
This method is ideal for documents that will be printed and signed by hand, or for documents where you want to show the signer exactly where to place their signature before they use a signing tool.
How to Add an Interactive Signature Field
In Adobe Acrobat Pro, go to Tools > Prepare Form. Acrobat scans the document for likely form fields and adds them automatically. If a signature field wasn't detected, click the Signature Field tool in the toolbar and draw it where you want the signature to appear. Save the file โ the signature field is now interactive and will prompt recipients to sign when they click it.
Recipients who receive a PDF with an interactive signature field can fill it in using Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free โ they don't need the Pro version to sign a field, only to create one.
Adding Multiple Signature Lines for Multiple Signers
Contracts and agreements often require multiple signatures โ from both parties, or from a signatory and a witness. Add a separate signature line or field for each person, with a label identifying whose signature goes where. For visual lines, include a name label and a date line next to each signature line so signers know to complete both.
If using a PDF Sign tool to add your own signature first, position it in your designated signature area before sending the document to the next signer โ this confirms your section is complete and leaves the other fields visibly empty for the recipient.
Protecting the Document After Adding Signature Lines
Once the signature lines are in place, consider restricting editing so recipients can only fill in the designated fields rather than modifying other content. In Adobe Acrobat, go to File > Properties > Security and set a permissions password that allows form filling but blocks general editing.
For a simpler approach, add the signature lines, flatten the rest of the document content using a PDF Editor to lock the base content in place, and leave only the signature area interactive. This prevents accidental edits to contract text while still allowing the signature to be added.
