You have a PDF where every page is surrounded by a decorative border. It might be a fancy frame added by a scanner's auto-enhancement feature, a colored rectangle that a designer used as a page template, or a border that was part of the original document but is now unwanted because you need a clean, borderless version for printing or repurposing. The answer depends on how the border was created. If the border is outside the main content area and the content has a consistent margin, cropping can remove it cleanly. When Cropping Alone Can Remove the Border
When the decorative border is a frame around the outside of the page, outside the content area, with a consistent margin between the border and the text or images. This is manual, pixel-level work, and it is practical only for a small number of pages. Using Redaction for Solid-Color Borders
If the border is a solid color, black, white, or a single flat shade, and it does not contain any content you need to preserve, PDF redaction tools can remove it by covering it with a white or background-colored rectangle. This is not true removal. It is covering the border with an opaque overlay that matches the page background. What to Do When the Border Is Part of a Scanned Book or Bound Document
Book scans often include a dark gutter shadow along the spine edge, which acts like an unwanted border. This shadow is not a decorative frame. It is the physical gap between the page and the scanner glass where the binding prevents the page from lying flat. Removing it requires cropping into the page content, which risks cutting off text that runs close to the spine.
The best approach for gutter shadows is to crop conservatively, removing only the darkest portion of the shadow while leaving a narrow margin before the text. A 0.2-inch crop from the spine edge usually removes the darkest shadow without affecting text. If the text extends into the shadow area, which happens with tightly bound books where the text runs close to the gutter, accept a small amount of shadow residue rather than cutting off letters.
