How to Rotate and Straighten Pages in a PDF

A PDF where one page is sideways, or where a scanned document came in at a slight angle, is more annoying than it sounds — especially when it needs to be read, signed, or submitted. Both problems are fixable, and fixing them takes less than a minute with the right approach. The solutions are slightly different depending on whether you're dealing with rotation (a page that's 90 or 180 degrees off) or skew (a page that's tilted a few degrees from a scan).

Rotation vs Skew: Two Different Problems

Rotation is a right-angle orientation problem — the page is 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counterclockwise, or upside down. This happens when a document is scanned with the paper placed incorrectly, when a phone camera captures a document in the wrong orientation, or when a landscape-oriented page gets embedded in a portrait document without adjustment.

Skew is a subtle tilt — the page content is rotated a few degrees rather than a full 90. This is almost exclusively a scanning artifact, caused by placing the document slightly off-center on the scanner glass or by a document feeder that pulled the paper at an angle. Skew makes text look slanted and is particularly noticeable on documents with horizontal rules or tabular content.

How to Rotate Pages in a PDF

Rotating pages is a standard function in virtually every PDF tool. The key distinction is whether you want to rotate a single page, a selection of pages, or all pages — and whether you want the rotation to be permanent or view-only.

View-only rotation: most PDF viewers let you rotate the current view without changing the file. In Adobe Reader, use View > Rotate View. This only affects what you see on screen — the file itself is unchanged, and anyone else who opens it will still see the sideways page.

Permanent rotation: to actually fix the file, use a PDF Editor or page management tool. In Adobe Acrobat, open the page thumbnails panel, right-click the page you want to rotate, and choose Rotate Pages. Select the rotation direction and whether to apply it to the current page, a range of pages, or all pages. Save the file and the rotation is baked in.

WukongPDF's PDF Editor at www.wukongpdf.com handles page rotation directly in the browser — upload the PDF, rotate the pages that need fixing, download the corrected file. For a document with one or two sideways pages, this takes about thirty seconds.

A Common Trap: Rotating and Not Saving Properly

In some PDF tools, rotating a page and then saving with Ctrl+S saves the view rotation but not the actual page orientation — or vice versa. The distinction between "save" and "save as" matters here. After rotating pages permanently in Acrobat, use File > Save (not just closing the window) to ensure the rotation is written to the file. If you close without saving, or save in a way that doesn't commit the change, the next person who opens the file will see the original orientation.

A reliable check: after saving, close the file completely, reopen it, and verify the rotation persisted. If it reverted, the save didn't commit the change — try again and confirm before sharing.

How to Straighten a Skewed Scan

Fixing a skewed scan is more involved than rotating a page because it requires detecting and correcting a small arbitrary angle rather than snapping to a right angle. Most basic PDF editors don't include deskew functionality — it's typically found in OCR tools and document scanning software.

The most practical approaches:

  • OCR with deskew: many OCR tools include automatic deskew as part of the processing pipeline. Running a skewed scanned PDF through an OCR tool often corrects the tilt as a side effect of preparing the image for text recognition.
  • Rescan: if the physical document is still available, rescanning with the paper placed carefully flat and straight is the cleanest fix. Modern scanner apps on phones include automatic perspective correction that handles minor skew automatically.
  • Image editing then re-PDF: for a single page, convert to image, use an image editor to rotate by the exact skew angle, then convert back to PDF. This is more steps but gives precise control over the correction amount.

Preventing the Problem at the Source

For scanned documents, the simplest fix is upstream: place documents carefully on the scanner glass, use the alignment guides if the scanner has them, and enable automatic deskew in the scanning software if the option exists. Phone scanning apps like Adobe Scan, Microsoft Lens, and the built-in iOS document scanner all include automatic perspective correction that catches most orientation problems before the file is saved. A few seconds of care at the scanning step eliminates the need to correct it afterward.
