A sideways PDF is almost always fixable in under a minute. The page rotation is stored in the file and can be changed without affecting the content. Whether it's one page or the whole document, the fix is straightforward.
Why It Happens
PDF pages have a rotation value stored in the file โ 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees. This gets set incorrectly in a few common ways: scanning a document with the paper fed sideways, printing to PDF from an application that had the wrong orientation set, receiving a document where the creator rotated pages in their source software and the rotation carried over unexpectedly, or a phone scan app that didn't auto-correct the orientation.
Occasionally what looks like a sideways PDF is actually a landscape-orientation document โ the content is genuinely designed for wide pages, not rotated incorrectly. In those cases the document is displaying correctly and rotating it would make the content unreadable. If the text appears to run correctly from left to right but the page is wider than tall, it's probably landscape by design.
Rotating in Preview on Mac
Open the PDF in Preview and show the thumbnail panel (View โ Thumbnails). Click the page that needs rotating to select it โ Command-click to select multiple pages, Command-A to select all. Then go to Tools โ Rotate Left or Rotate Right (keyboard shortcuts: Command+L and Command+R). The rotation applies immediately and you can keep rotating until the page is correct. Save with File โ Export as PDF.
Preview saves the rotation as part of the PDF file structure, so the corrected orientation persists when the document is opened in any other viewer. This isn't just a display setting โ it's a permanent fix to the file.
Rotating in Adobe Reader (Free)
Adobe Reader's free version lets you rotate the view temporarily, but it doesn't save the rotation permanently when you close the file โ it's just a display change for that session. To permanently fix the rotation in Acrobat, you need the paid version (Acrobat Pro): Tools โ Organize Pages โ select the page โ use the rotation controls.
If you only have free Reader and need a permanent fix, the browser tool or Preview are better options.
Browser Tool: Works on Any Platform

Fixing Scans That Come Out Sideways
If you regularly get sideways scans from a particular scanner or scanning app, fixing the rotation setting at the source is more efficient than correcting files after the fact. Most scanners have an orientation setting in their software โ check whether Auto Orientation or Auto Rotate is available and enable it. Phone scanning apps like Microsoft Lens and Adobe Scan apply automatic orientation correction by default, which is one reason they often produce better results than feeding paper into a flatbed scanner incorrectly.
