You take a photo of a printed document with your phone. Maybe it is a page from a book at the library, a handout from a meeting, a receipt you need for an expense report, or a sign you saw with important information. The photo is clear enough to read, but it is just a picture. You cannot search for words in it. You cannot copy and paste text from it. You cannot edit it. It is a photograph of text, not text itself.

OCR accuracy depends heavily on the quality of the input image. A well-lit, sharply focused photo of a flat page will OCR at 95% to 99% accuracy. A poorly lit, blurry, skewed photo of a curved page might OCR at 70% accuracy, which means roughly one in every three or four words contains an error. The time spent getting a good photo is returned many times over in reduced correction effort.

Place the document on a flat, well-lit surface. Natural daylight is ideal because it is diffuse and shadow-free. Overhead office lighting works if you position yourself so your shadow does not fall on the page. Hold the phone directly above the page, parallel to it, not at an angle. Use both hands or rest your elbows on a surface to keep the phone steady. Fill the frame with the page, leaving a small margin around the edges. Tap the screen to focus on the text. If your phone has a document scan mode, use it. On iPhone, the Notes app includes a Scan Documents feature that automatically detects the page edges, corrects perspective, and enhances contrast. On Android, Google Drive's scan feature does the same.

If the page is from a bound book and cannot lie flat, press the spine gently to reduce the curve, and accept that OCR accuracy will be lower near the gutter where the page curves away from the camera. For critical text near the spine, take a second photo focusing on that area specifically, with the phone closer to the page to maximize resolution on the curved text.

Running OCR on a Photo Using Your Phone's Built-In Tools

iPhones include Live Text, a built-in OCR feature that works directly in the Camera app, Photos app, and Safari. Point the camera at text, and a Live Text icon appears in the corner of the viewfinder. Tap it, and the phone recognizes the text in real time. You can select, copy, and paste it immediately. For a photo already in your library, open it in the Photos app and look for the Live Text icon. Tap it to highlight all recognized text. You can copy selected portions or all of it. Live Text works entirely on the device with no internet connection required.

Android phones have Google Lens built into Google Photos and the Google app. Open the photo in Google Photos and tap the Lens icon. Google Lens identifies text in the image and lets you select, copy, translate, or search it. Like Apple's Live Text, Google Lens works offline for text recognition on recent devices. For both platforms, the built-in OCR is designed for short passages, a few sentences or a paragraph, not for multi-page documents. It extracts the text but does not produce a formatted document.
