How to Split a PDF Into Multiple Files

Splitting a PDF into multiple separate files is useful when you need to share specific sections without sending the entire document, extract chapters from a report, or divide a merged file back into its original parts. It's one of the most common PDF tasks and takes less than a minute with the right tool.

How to Split a PDF Into Multiple Files Online

WukongPDF's Split PDF tool offers three split modes. Upload your PDF and choose the mode that fits your need: split by page range (extract specific pages into one file), split every N pages (divide the document into equal chunks), or split into individual pages (one PDF per page). Click Split, then download the output โ€” multiple files arrive in a ZIP archive.

The page range mode is the most flexible. Enter a range like 1-5 to extract the first five pages, or 3,7,12 to pull specific pages into their own file. You can define multiple ranges in one operation to split a document into several parts simultaneously.

Splitting a PDF in Adobe Acrobat

In Adobe Acrobat Pro, go to Tools > Organize Pages > Split. Choose how to split: by number of pages, by file size, or by bookmarks (which splits at each chapter marker in the document). Click Output Options to set where the split files are saved and how they're named. Click Split to produce the separate PDFs.

The split by bookmarks option is particularly useful for structured documents like annual reports, instruction manuals, or multi-chapter contracts โ€” Acrobat uses the existing table of contents structure to determine where to divide the file.

Splitting a PDF on Mac Using Preview

Preview can extract individual pages without a dedicated split tool. Open the PDF with the sidebar showing (View > Thumbnails). To save a single page as its own PDF, drag that page thumbnail out of the sidebar and onto the Desktop or into a Finder folder โ€” Preview creates a standalone PDF for that page automatically.

For extracting a range of pages, select multiple thumbnails in the sidebar (Shift-click for a range, Cmd-click for individual pages), then drag the selection out of the sidebar. Preview creates a new PDF containing only the selected pages. This is a quick native method for Mac users who only occasionally need to split PDFs.

Splitting Large PDFs Efficiently

For very large PDFs โ€” long contracts, multi-hundred-page reports, full-year archives โ€” an online Split PDF tool is the most practical option since it processes the file on the server without taxing your device. Upload speed is the only constraint; once uploaded, even a 500-page document splits in seconds.

After splitting, each resulting file retains all the content from its original pages โ€” text remains selectable, links still work, and images are at their original quality. If you later need to recombine some of the split files, WukongPDF's Merge PDF tool handles that in the same browser session.
